Join a productive and joyful philosophical journey towards self-excellence, through the exploration of the Aristotelian theory on how to behave and live; probably the longest-lived and most widely accepted theory of the Western world. Walk in the footsteps of Aristotle’s students, in his School, Lyceum, in the center of Athens. Led by an enthusiastic facilitator, this experience is a philosophy workshop for beginners, a practical “manual” on how to be virtuous in your daily life, applying the Golden Mean rule, while interacting with other people successfully.

Suitable for people over 16 years old.

Very small groups: up to 5 persons.

Language is plain English; all terms will be explained in simple words and through examples.

Duration: 100-120 min approximately

We will meet at the exit of Evangelismos metro station and settle at the adjusted Rizari Park, under shaded trees. To introduce ourselves with the great teacher, we will shortly discuss about the historical background, through story-telling and photos, focusing on the chain: Socrates teacher of Plato teacher of Aristotle. At this point you will also have the opportunity to read some of Aristotle’s phrases aloud, in ancient Greek, using our special reading cards! If you don't believe us, see here: https://youtu.be/_hVoJGl3a3s

Then it’s time to explore the Aristotelian Ethics theory, as it is described in his book “Nicomachean Ethics”, starting with the key element: Virtues!

Afterward, we will leave the Park and move towards the nearby archaeological site of Lyceum, Aristotle’s School. During our 10-minute walk we will talk about Aristotle’s work and about Lyceum’s creation and operation.

After entering Lyceum, we will philosophize while walking around the building remains, same as the Aristotle’s students used to do; this was the reason why they took the name "Peripatitiki philosophers" (Peripatos=walk). We will discover the actual application of the Golden Mean in specific cases, through a card-game. Our walk will lead us to the small Amphitheater with a direct view of the excavations. There, our facilitator will help us understand the vices of the virtues, and then examine them through examples taken from our daily life.

We will close our workshop by discussing how the Aristotelian theory can help us achieve Eudaimonia, the ultimate human goal.

In the end, there will be time for photos.

This experience is NOT a guided tour. It is a philosophy experience, suitable alco for people without any previous knowledge.

The archaeological site of Lykeion is one of the most important places in the history of the human spirit. The monumental intellectual construct of Aristotle and his School summarized coherently all the philosophical and scientific inquiries of the ancient world, and had inestimable influence on the formation of Christian Patristic theology. For eighteen centuries, until the Renaissance, Aristotle was the epitome of human wisdom.

It is located on Rigillis street, in the centre of Athens, just a few minutes walk from the Greek Parliament, right next to the Byzantine and Christian Museum and very close to the War Museum of Athens. According to ancient testimonies, Lykeion was an idyllic grove, lying east of the city, outside the Gate of Diochares. The rescue excavations have revealed building remains of a palaestra, part of the famous Gymnasium of the Lykeion (Lyceum). The palaestra is the place where athletes trained in wrestling, boxing and pankration (a combination of wrestling and boxing) and has been revealed over an area of 0.25 hectares (50 x 48 m.). A large building with longitudinal axis from north to south, its foundations were laid in the second half of the 4th century BC. The complex was preserved, with repairs, for some seven hundred years, until the early 4th century AD, when it was finally abandoned. However, after the mid 3rd century AD it probably did not function as a palaestra.

The gymnasia played a decisive role in the bodily and spiritual education of young men, interwoven as they were with the concept of gymnastics as a cultural system, promoting the ideal of the complete human personality, harmonious in mind and body (mens sana in corpore sano). Gradually, they evolved into prominent cultural centres. In the 4th century BC the first philosophical schools, in essence the first universities, were founded in the gymnasia: Aristotle established his own philosophical School in 335 BC at Lykeion (Lyceum) and taught there over a period of about twelve years, the most productive period of his life.
